Robert Frost
On March 26, 1874 in the city of San Francisco one of the greatest poets of all
time entered the world, Robert Frost. He was the son of Isabelle Moody and William
Prescott Frost Jr., who was a man of many talents himself, including journalism, teaching
and editing. Frost’s father passed on in May of 1885 when Robert was just 11 years old.
After his fathers death the family moved to Massachusetts. This is where Frost
would attend high school. Robert was a very bright student who did very well in class.
He graduated high school in 1892. After high school Frost went on to further his
education at Dartmouth Collage, that only worked out for a few months due to a prank
that Robert pulled. After taking some time to gain some life experience Frost was
accepted to Harvard University in 1897.
In 1894 Frost sold his first poem. He was paid 15 dollars for “My Butterfly: An Elegy”.
Frost was so excited that he proposed to Elinor White. She turned him down but later
down the road she agreed to marry him. After Marrying they moved to Derry, New
Hampshire where they lived on a farm. During their time in Derry Frost worked as an
English teacher at Pinkerton Academy for 5 years and then at what is now Plymouth
State University.
In 1912 Robert decided to sell his farm in Derry and sail to England. In 1913 Frost
published his first book of poetry, “A Boy’s Will”. This book had several of Frost’s poems
including ‘A Late Walk’, ‘Going For Water’ and My Butterfly’. The next book to come was
“North of Boston” which was published in 1914. This turned out to be one of Roberts most
popular books. It contained several of his best poems including ‘The Death Of A Hired
Man’.
In the year of 1920 Frost bought another farm. This one located in Vermont. Frost
kept himself quiet busy with poetry readings and teaching. Robert taught at several
places throughout his life including Dartmouth and Amhusrt Collages and Harvard
University.
Frost’s wife died in the year of 1938. He also lost 4 of his children through the
years. Robert Frost left this world himself in January of 1963, he was 88 years old.
Frost accomplished many things in his lifetime. He has written many poems that
will remain popular through many generations to come. Over the course of his life Robert
Frost wrote 142 poems. Although mainly known for his poetry, Frost has many famous
quotes as well. I will end with some of my favorite.
“A mother takes 20 years to make a man of her boy, and another woman makes a fool
of him in 20 minutes.”
“Don’t ever take a fence down until you know why it was put up.”
“The best things and the best people rise out of their separateness; I’m against a
homogenized society because I want the cream to rise.”
